Membership Eligibility
Membership in the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) is by invitation only and is reserved for experienced trial lawyers of exceptional character, professionalism, and demonstrated commitment to the civil justice system. Candidates must be licensed attorneys in good standing who have substantial experience serving as lead counsel in civil jury trials—currently reflected in a requirement of at least seven jury trials to verdict or hung jury, together with a broader point-based measure of trial experience—and who are recognized by their peers for civility, integrity, and ethical advocacy. Nominees are sponsored by existing members and undergo a rigorous vetting process that includes review and approval by the local chapter and the national organization, typically requiring a supermajority vote. Beyond trial experience, ABOTA emphasizes a deep commitment to preserving the Seventh Amendment right to civil jury trial and to upholding the rule of law, making membership both selective and a mark of distinction within the trial bar.
